When it comes to cosmetic tattooing — especially eyebrows — most people focus on the shape, the colour, and the final look. But there’s one important factor that often gets overlooked, and it can make or break your results: your skin health. Whether you’re booking in for soft ombré, ombré, or a nano combination brow, the condition of your skin plays a huge role in how well the pigment retains, how evenly it heals, and how beautiful the final result looks. Here’s why skin prep matters

Why Skin Prep Matters So Much for PMU (Permanent Makeup)

Cosmetic tattooing works by gently implanting pigment into the upper layers of the skin. For the pigment to hold and heal evenly, the skin needs to be hydrated, balanced, and free from irritation or buildup. Think of it like painting a wall — you’ll get a much smoother, longer-lasting finish on a clean, primed surface than on one that’s dry, flaky, or textured. It’s the same with your skin.

Well-Hydrated Skin Retains Pigment Better

If your skin is dry or dehydrated, it can:

  • Heal unevenly

  • Flake excessively

  • Cause patchiness in your healed result

  • Struggle to “grip” the pigment, making it fade faster

In contrast, hydrated skin holds onto pigment more effectively, which means:

Better colour retention

More even healing

Less patchiness

✅ A longer-lasting tattoo

Skin That’s Prepped = Smoother Healing

Overly oily, dry, sunburned, or compromised skin can affect:

  • How the pigment implants

  • How much trauma the skin experiences during the procedure

  • How long it takes to heal

By prepping your skin properly in the weeks leading up to your appointment, you’re giving yourself the best possible chance of a smooth healing journey and a flawless result.

So, How Should You Prep Your Skin Before Cosmetic Tattooing?

Here’s what I recommend in the 2–4 weeks leading up to your brow appointment:

1. Keep your skin hydrated

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Use a nourishing moisturiser daily (especially in winter months)

  • Avoid overuse of mattifying products that dry out your skin

2. Avoid harsh skincare products

  • No active ingredients like retinol, AHAs, BHAs, or vitamin C on or around the brow area

  • Stop using these at least 7 days before your appointment

3. Exfoliate gently

  • A light exfoliation (not within 3 days of your appointment) helps remove dead skin cells and allows for smoother pigment implantation

4. Book a skin treatment (optional but highly recommended)

A light dermaplaning or hydrating facial 1–2 weeks before your appointment can really enhance your skin’s ability to retain pigment — especially if your skin tends to be dry or dull.

Post-Tattoo Skincare Matters Too

Once your brows are freshly tattooed, the healing process begins. Well-prepped skin:

  • Is more resilient

  • Scabs less

  • Feels less irritated or itchy

  • Heals with a better colour payoff

I provide every client with a detailed aftercare routine to follow, including healing balm and instructions to support optimal results — but great skin going into the appointment always makes a difference.
